Renaissance is perhaps the purest evocation of comic visuals seen in cinema. The architectural vistas of future Paris, with its glass-covered Metro stations, ultra-thin suspended bridges, and vertiginous stacks of decaying tenements, are powerful, and very evocative. This is a film noir in the most literal sense, defined entirely by jet-black shadows, with touches of color as in Rumble Fish.



This monochrome stems from the roots of cinema. Lights, hard edged imaginery, flamboyant retro-futurism, fine voices, produce a dystopian, eye-popping thriller that probes into the recesses of human condition.

Thanks to motion capture, animation becomes as fluid as live action, but enabling things not possible there. The characters' movements, and their voices from a fine cast, create individuals whose dilemmas are the emotional core of the story.



It took seven years to be made, and the result is spectacular. The monochrome work is sharp, creating a world where light and dark exist without margin of error.



Plot:

In Paris year 2054, where every gesture is checked and filmed, Ilona Tasuiev, a young scientist envied by all for her beauty and intelligence, is kidnapped. Avalon, the megalithic corporation where Ilona works, puts pressure on Karas, a controversial policeman specialising in abductions, to find her as quickly as possible. But Karas soon feels a little presence in his wake.

He isn't alone in the quest for Ilona, and his pursuers seem poised to overtake him. Finding Ilona becomes vital: the brilliant young woman is involved in a conspiracy bigger than any imaginable. She holds the key to a secret that puts humanity's future in question: The Renaissance Protocol...
