Im Jahre 1987 fliegt der US-Air-Force-Pilot Buck Rogers mit einem Space Shuttle ins All. Durch Gas, das durch einen Unfall an Bord ausströmt, wird er tief gefroren und erst gut 500 Jahre später wiederbelebt. Die Erde hat sich seitdem dramatisch verändert. Ein Nuklearkrieg Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts hat zu einer Veränderung des gesamten gesellschaftlichen Systems geführt. Die so genannte Earth Defence Force hat die Regierung übernommen und ist unter anderem auch für die Abwehr feindlicher Attacken aus dem All verantwortlich. Vor allem vom Planeten Draconia droht permanente Gefahr, hat dessen Herrscher doch nichts Geringeres als die Invasion der Erde geplant.
