John Coltrane and his classic quartet (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones) are in fine form on this 1962 studio LP. High points include a passionate "Out of This World" (what did Johnny Mercer think of this version?) and a classic version of Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes." The remainder of the program includes "The Inch Worm" and the two Coltrane compositions, "Tunji" and "Miles' Mode." Not as intense as many of Trane's other albums, this is still a recommended and enjoyable set. In 2002, Impulse! released Coltrane and Ballads each with a bonus disc of mostly unreleased tape. Where the bonus disc for Ballads was still revelatory in its general breadth of material, the overall value of the extra hour of program that the bonus disc for Coltrane provides is in another league altogether. Containing three songs that are generally not associated with this album ("Up 'Gainst the Wall," "Big Nick," and two versions of "Impressions") and one that is actually heard for the first time ("Not Yet"), this becomes a pretty exciting proposition for Coltrane obsessives, but is probably still too much information for the casual fan.
