Torrent description

TITLE:
Textbook of Arthroscopy

Description
Synopsis

Striving to be comprehensive, this textbook features 81 chapters on the technology and basic skills used in arthroscopy, the basic approach used to diagnose and image each part of the body, and the surgical procedures and techniques for each anatomical area. Each of the chapters on surgeries include an initial "nutshell" outline, a history of treatment, and description of the physical examination, imaging, indications and contraindications, surgical technique, postoperative management, complications, and a list of references. Copious images, most of them photos and some video clips of actual surgeries, are included with each chapter. The editors are with the U. of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville and the Rush U. Medical Center in Chicago, where they teach sports medicine and orthopedic surgery. The majority of the contributors are in the US. Annotation © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book is an exceptional reference for all aspects of arthroscopy from historical background to how to do current techniques. Each major joint is represented as a color coded section making it easy to use as a reference for a specific part of the body.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a definitive resource for orthopedic surgeons who choose to use the arthroscope as a visualization tool or facilitator of surgical techniques in most of the major joints in the body. This is a lofty but worthwhile goal. There is a great need for such an up-to-date, go-to reference in this field. The editors and contributing authors have done a remarkable job in creating a book that will be the go-to reference for many years.
Audience: This book targets orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents in training who want to optimize their skills and enhance their abilities and techniques with the arthroscope. Indeed, the authors note that even the most technically adept arthroscopist may find himself humbled by the newest of techniques and arthroscopic skills. Drs. Cole and Miller have long been considered amongst the future leaders of orthopedics and arthroscopy. Their day has clearly arrived. Their leadership has brought a collective of premier contributors and the result is an extremely valuable reference.
Features: In addition to some history and basic concepts of modern arthroscopy, the book is divided into anatomic sections. Each joint is addressed from basic issues such as normal anatomy and diagnostic arthroscopy and progresses through advanced reconstructive skills for specific pathologies. Outstanding features include its ease of use, its thoroughness, its complete coverage of multiple joints, and crisp and clear pictures. The CD-ROM is a wonderful bonus for dynamic visualization of some of these procedures.
Assessment: Most books on arthroscopy focus on a particular joint, a few are offered as references that cover the entire gamut of arthroscopy, but none offer such high quality images. A picture is worth a thousand words and the presentation here is excellent time and time again. In addition, with the active development of new skills and techniques in this book offered by Drs. Cole and Miller, it is also the most current and up-to-date offering on the market. I love this book and think it would be a great addition to both academic and personal libraries. I will offer it as gift to my graduating residents as a key reference for future skills.
