Allan Beswick visits the last working inland salt mine left in Britain, 500 feet below the plains of Cheshire. He goes underground to investigate the unexpected things that reside down there, in huge empty caverns that are now being used to store archive materials.

Winsford Mine, in Cheshire, is still very much in production, with a million tons of rock salt carved out each year. It's not the history of industrial salt that's caught broadcaster Allan Beswick's interest but the cathedral-sized caverns that the decades of mining has created. He takes a trip around this dark, dry and ambient-temperatured underground city to meet the people who move in after the miners leave. It's the perfect place to store books and documents, and current clients include the Bodleian Library and the National Archive.
