Kwame Kwei-Armah retraces Queen Elizabeth's 1953 Commonwealth Tour which was a six-month journey across five continents to persuade the Colonies to stay attached to Britain as part of the Commonwealth. In this the third episode, Kwame visits Fiji, Sri Lanka and Uganda as he continues to retrace the Queen's tour.



Fiji has now dispensed with the Queen as head of state and, after numerous military coups, was suspended from the Commonwealth in 2006. Kwame meets General Rabuka, the military coup leader who became the first man to oust a British monarch since Oliver Cromwell.



Sri Lanka was granted independence six years before the Queen's tour, but kept her as Head of State. It was a link Britain was keen to maintain, but her visit was contentious. The British hadn't quite got used to the idea that its presence in the Indian sub-contenent was over, and it felt that what it wanted should be what happened. The Sri Lankan's took a slightly different view and said that it was their customs and practices that should prevail. And all this was down to a pair of shoes.



In 1953 a demand for independence was sweeping through East Africa. Of the 21 African countries under British rule at the time, Uganda was the only one included on the Queen's tour. Kwame discovers how anger about British rule in Uganda resulted in the cancellation of the Queen's visit to the capital, Kampala. It's also the country where what he sees now is so markedly different to what the Queen saw 56 years ago. Just looking at the faces of the Queens's reception party is enough to tell you that there have been big big changes in AFrica.
