We had Basanti on a tonga, then in an autorickshaw and now our very own Gujarati Basanti will be driving a chhakda! And the area between Chotila and Than in Surendranagar district will be the Ramgarh of the original Sholay.
So what if Ram Gopal Verma ki Aag bombed on the box office. The Gujarati version of Sholay may just titillate audience with Gabbar Singh riding a baby cycle and using a cycle tube to threaten people.
And if you are wondering why a cycle tube, that is because in the Gujarati version Gabbar was running a puncture repairing shop apart from being a bootlegger, before he becomes a dacoit as none of his ventures worked.
Director and producer of Gujarati Sholay, Vikram Dodiya, is hoping that his Gujarati version of Sholay will amuse audience because it has got a comic twist to it.
The two hour long film being made on a low budget will of course, not have horses, even though Kathiawadi horses are readily available in the area where the film is being shot, including Rajkot.
Horses or no horses, Jay and Viru are definitely there, but instead of riding around on a Bullet with a sidecar they will be having a scooter with the sidecar. Thakur and his role in the Gujarati version, played by Milan Trivedi, will remain a suspense.
Dodiya said, "It?s more of a parody of the original Sholay. In the film ?Gujarati Sholay? actors Jitu Pandya, Chandan Kumar and Hina Rajput are playing the role of Gabbar, Viru and Basanti while Munna Rathod is playing Amitabh?s role as Jay".
Of the actors, Jitu, who has acted in 40 Gujarati films, is thrilled about the role of Gabbar. Equally thrilled is Hina. "Imagine Basanti riding on a chhakda. I am sure I will make people laugh."
