I couldn't describe this video clip any better myself. On Friday, June 20 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience took the stage at Devonshire Downs, Northridge, California for the Newport '69 Pop Festival. The original Experience was only 9 days from breaking up and tensions were high within the group. Despite this, the spring/summer American Tour had produced some incredible performances from Hendrix -- this was not to be one of them. Coming on at midnight before an unruly crowd, they played what was widely considered to be a lackluster set. Apparently, no one was more aware of this than Jimi himself, because on Sunday afternoon he returned to the stage for a jam session with Buddy Miles, Eric Burdon and various members of Big Brother and the Holding Company and other bands. The quote above is one of several similarly emphatic reviews from that afternoon's performance. Jimi and Co. played for almost 2 hours, with him touching on several musical ideas which would turn up later in '69 and through '70 as fully-formed songs. If one listens closely, you can discern snatches of Machine Gun, Message of Love, Power of Soul, among others. In any case, merely viewing the first 3 or 4 minutes of this video should be enough for anyone to see that Jimi was the best there ever was...
