Prokofiev - String Quartet No. 1 in B minor, Op. 50 (1931) - String Quartet No. 2 in F major, Op. 92 (1941) - Sequoia String Quartet - Yoko Matsuda, 1st Violin / Miwako Watanabe, 2nd Violin / James Dunham, Viola / Robert Martin, Violoncello
As personal, individual and characteristic as those from the towering quartet cycle of Shostakovich - but in a wholly different direction - closer acquaintance with these works only makes one regret that Prokofiev did not write more in this genre. And, it would be difficult to find better performances of these works than the ones offered here by the Sequoia Quartet. This is music which deepens considerably the more one listens.
