When incomes to discussing subjects like lesbian relationships, domestic violence and incest Woman's Hour has always been there, asking the questions that others felt too uncomfortable to raise. It is entirely fitting that the first ever UK production of Alice Walker's hard-hitting novel should be in the Woman's Hour drama slot. Nadine Marshall's portrayal of Celie, the central female character, is powerful, poignant and inspiring. The story begins with Celie as a teenager being raped by the man she presumes is her father but ends with a strong, contented woman having taken control of her own destiny. The journey to be reunited with her family is one full of betrayal, loss and cruelty, but Walker never permits Celie to be crushed - even at her lowest ebb she seizes what chance she has to get through. You won't need a tissue to get through this, you'll need a whole box.
