The Battlefield franchise is a series of computer and console games that
started with the PC/Mac game Battlefield 1942, the series is developed by
EA Digital Illusions CE, and published by Electronic Arts. The games feature
a focus on large maps and vehicle warfare over and above traditional first
person shooters. The main benefactor of the games is their online gameplay.
Star Wars Battlefront and its sequels were influenced by this series.
Battlefield 1942 is a 3D World War II first-person shooter (FPS) computer
game developed by Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts for
Microsoft Windows (2002) and Apple Macintosh (2004). The game can be
played in singleplayer mode against computer game bots or in multiplayer
mode against players on the Internet. It is also a popular platform for
mod developers, with a large number of released modifications that alter
the gameplay and theme.
In-game, players assume the role of one of five classes of infantry:
Scout, Assault, Anti-Tank, Medic, and Engineer. Players also have the
ability to fly various World War II fighter aircraft and bombers, navigate
capital ships, submarines and aircraft carriers, man coastal artillery
defenses, drive tanks, APCs and jeeps, and take control of anti-aircraft
guns and mounted machine guns.
Each battle takes place on one of several maps located in a variety of
places and famous battlefields in all of the major theaters of World War
II: the Pacific, European, North African, and Eastern Fronts. Combat is
always fought between the Axis Powers and the Allies. The location
determines which nation-specific armies are used (for example, on the
Wake Island map, it is Japan versus the United States, while on the
Battle of Britain map, it is Germany versus the United Kingdom). The
maps in Battlefield 1942 are based on real battles and are somewhat
The Road To Rome
The creators of Battlefield 1942 have released expansion packs entitled
Battlefield 1942: The Road To Rome (which added the Italian Front)
and Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons Of WWII. Both add various new
gameplay modes and design concepts. The Road To Rome features a focus
on the Italian battles and allows players to play as the French army.
Secret Weapons Of WWII focuses on prototype, experimental, and rarely
used weapons. It adds downloadable patches, fixes bugs in the game,
and it adds some extra content (such as the aforementioned Battle
of Britain map).
Secret Weapons of WWII
Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII is the second of two expansions
to the World War II first-person shooter computer game Battlefield 1942.
It is developed by Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic
Arts for Microsoft Windows September 4, 2003 in North America and
September 5, 2003 in Europe. It was published by Aspyr Media for Mac
OS October 25, 2004.
Secret Weapons of WWII brings many new features to the original game,
such as new weapons, vehicles, battles, factions, and a new gameplay
mode that focuses on fulfilling objectives more that destroying the
enemy army. These new features help to bring variety to its
predecessor\'s gameplay without overhauling the series. For example,
while an Allied engineer may still maintain his original role as
being able to repair vehicles, his long-ranged rifle has been replaced
with a shotgun, which is effective at short distances.
Critically, Secret Weapons of WWII was well received. GameSpot gave
the game a 8.2 out of 10 summarizing that "Its additions are extremely
enjoyable to play around with and, in some cases, really change the
gameplay of the original in new and intriguing ways." IGN gave the
game 8.8 out of 10 noting that "...assuming you can swallow the more
fanciful additions, you\'ll find plenty of excitement here." As of
June, 2008, the game has received a compilation score of 82 on
GameRankings and 79 on Metacritic
Battlefield 1942 includes original game and Battlefield 1942: The Road
To Rome. Battlefield 1942: World War II Anthology added Battlefield
1942: Secret Weapons Of WWII expansion pack. Battlefield 1942: The
Complete Collection added Battlefield Vietnam and Battlefield
Vietnam WWII Mod.
Battlefield Vietnam is the next computer game in Electronic Arts
Battlefield franchise after Battlefield 1942. The game was developed
by Digital Illusions Canada and published by Electronic Arts on March
15, 2004 in North America and days later in other parts of the world.
Battlefield Vietnam takes place during the Vietnam War. The game
features a large variety of maps based on historical settings, such as
the Cambodian Incursion, Ho Chi Minh Trail, Fall of Saigon, Ia Drang
Valley and Operation Flaming Dart.
On March 15, 2005, EA re-released the game as Battlefield Vietnam:
Redux, which includes the 1.01, 1.02, 1.1, and 1.2 patches, new vehicles,
maps, and a EA-produced World War II mod, based on the previous
Battlefield 2 (abbreviated to BF2) is a computer game in which
players fight in a modern battlefield using modern weapon systems.
Battlefield 2 is a first-person shooter with some strategy and RPG
elements.Battlefield 2 was developed by Digital Illusions CE (DICE)
with a custom game engine. During development, Trauma Studios
contributed to the development of the game after it was acquired by
Digital Illusions CE.BF2 is published by Electronic Arts as the
third full game of the Battlefield series, released in late June 2005.
The first two installments were Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield Vietnam.
BF2 includes a single-player mode with three difficulty levels and
multiplayer mode via the Internet or a LAN. Both player modes use the
same maps and use Battlefield\'s conquest game mode. Single-player mode
allows 15 computer controlled players, while Internet mode allows
up to 64 players. Players can choose to play 3 factions: United States
Marine Corps (USMC), People\'s Liberation Army (PLA), and the fictional
"Middle East Coalition" (MEC). Additional factions are playable
through the expansion packs.
A console branded version also exists (for Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS2),
named Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Although they both share the same
name, they differ quite considerably in execution, content, and gameplay.
Battlefield 2: Special Forces
Battlefield 2\'s only expansion pack, Special Forces, first began its
development sometime during or shortly before the release of the
original Battlefield 2 by DICE Canada: Battlefield producer, Mike
Doran, commented in August 2005 that "The truth is that work on
Battlefield 2: Special Forces began several months ago.". It was
officially announced on July 14, 2005 and released on November 21
of the same year. The focus of the development was infantry-based
combat as opposed to vehicle-centric combat from the original. As such,
most of the additional content in the expansion pack can be used by
infantry only or to assist the infantry
By name, this pack focuses on special warfare with players taking the
role of six unconventional forces: US Navy SEALS, British SAS, Russian
Spetsnaz, MEC Special Forces, and unspecified Rebels and Insurgents.
Players play in eight maps with ten more vehicles such as the AH-64D
Apache and Mi-35 Hind. In addition to these new contents, players have
access to new equipment such as night vision goggles, tear gas and
grappling hooks which can alter gameplay. There are eight more small
arms weapons available such as the G36K/E and FN SCAR L/H and several
weapons from the original are replaced. The expansion offers more awards
in the form of badges, ribbons, and medals that players can earn.
Finally, many of the weapons from the expansion may be used in the
original Battlefield 2.
This expansion pack is available for purchase via EA\'s content delivery
service, known as EA Store, in addition to retail copies and
Battlefield 2 Deluxe Edition.
Battlefield 2142 is a first-person shooter computer game developed
by Digital Illusions CE and is the fourth game in the Battlefield
series. It is set in the 22nd century, during a new ice age which
sees two military superpowers the European Union (EU) and ?an
Asian Coalition (PAC) battle for survival.
The game was designed primarily for multiplayer gameplay, allowing
a maximum of 64 players on a server or a maximum of 16 players in
single player mode against bots on Conquest mode. It has its own
ranking system to keep track of the user\'s stats similar to the one
used in its predecessor, Battlefield 2. It also opens up new categories
of vehicles and weapons not seen in Battlefield 2. Battlefield
2142 has an unlock system allowing the player to choose a new unlock
every time they achieve a new rank rather than making them purchase
the item. EA Games has also released a booster pack called Northern
Strike, which contains new maps, unlocks, and vehicles.
Northern Strike booster pack
On March 8, 2007, Electronic Arts released the Northern Strike
booster pack for the Battlefield 2142 game. However, in the UK,
retailers are selling empty Northern Strike game boxes containing a
download code for those who wish to purchase the booster pack in a
slightly more material form.
In Northern Strike, the battle moves to northern and central Europe
in 2145, three years after the war began. The PAC has set up
strongholds in the urban areas left abandoned due to their constant
assault, and the advancing ice sheets. The EU launches an offensive
to take back its land from the PAC. This fictional invasion greatly
resembles the 1944 invasion of Normandy, whereas Europe was finally
reclaimed by Allied Forces after an invasion expedition had arrived.
The booster pack contains ten new unlocks, three new maps, two new
vehicles, and a new game mode called Assault Lines. The booster
pack was exclusively available through the EA Link for 10.00 USD;
Since January of 2008, Battlefield 2142 Deluxe Edition contains
Northern Strike. It is now available from retailers outside the U.S.
