Afternoon Play: HMS Surprise 08-10-2008 09-10-2008 10-10-2008

Naval battles, political intrigue and romantic rivalry in Roger Danes's dramatisation of Patrick O'Brian's novel, set in 1804 in England, India and on the high seas.

From The Radio Times

Drop those grapnels, look out for that hole in the aftermost carlineculver and don't even go near the stump of the larboard cathead. Three Afternoon Plays later, this landlubber is a nautical know-it all. It's one of the joys of Patrick O'Brian's writing that he makes historical military details as exciting as the adventure stories he's placing them in. Fans of the dashing Captain Jack Aubrey and his super-intelligent sidekick Dr Stephen Maturin will not be disappointed by this dramatisation. It is absolutely true to the accuracy of the novels, of which this is the third in the sequence, right down to some stomach-churning descriptions of surgical operations. There's sex, there's violence and much talk of the sea. Time for me to go now-they're sounding six bells from the quarterdeck.

Jane Anderson
