---------------------------------------------------------------------
Junkyard is a gritty, heavily tattooed outfit that infused elements of southern
rock and blues into their brand of L.A. sleaze metal. Their no-frills brand of
rock 'n' roll, where the music mattered more then the image, should have
made them household names, but they failed to have much in the way of
commercial success.
The band was formed in Los Angeles by a couple of transplanted Texans in
David Roach (vocals) and Chris Gates (guitar, ex-Big Boys). Members came
and went before they offered the drum stool to Pat Muzingo, who in turn
brought with him bassist Clay Anthony. The final piece of the puzzle was the
addition of guitarist Brian Baker, whom Gates knew from the punk circuit
when he was in such bands as Minor Threat and Dag Nasty.
Geffen records gave the band $3000 to record a few songs and quickly
signed the band based on those early demos. The self-titled debut album,
produced by the legendary Tom Werman, followed a grittier hard rock path
then the punk roots of the members and enjoyed minor success with singles
such as "Hollywood" and "Simple Man".

Review:
Junkyard was a talented quintet whose debut was largely ignored but
remains a sleaze classic. Songs like "Hot Rod", "Hollywood" and "Texas" really
jam, while "Blooze" is one of the best tributes to alcohol ever recorded. In my
opinion vocalist David Roach sounds exactly like Motley Crue's Vince Neil at
times.
The sound on Junkyard is a mix of Little Caesar and Jetboy, a blend of blues
and punk with straight-ahead hard rock - an unusual mix indeed, but one that
works great. Junkyard still performs live every so often, and I hope to hear
new material from them in the near future. In the meantime I give this album
two thumbs up!
