Part One

The fresh-faced and lovely Gemma Arterton shines as Thomas Hardy's titular heroine in the BBC's first ever dramatisation of this much-loved classic. We get our first glimpse of the sweet, chaste and naive Tess as she country-dances on May Day with lots of other girls, all of them dressed in long white frocks. The sun is shining, the grass is green, everywhere is bathed in bucolic splendour and Tess doesn't have a care in the world. But her life veers off course when she meets the roguish Alec (Hans Matheson) and starts work on his mother's farm. Tess is a good girl who only wants to better herself with learning and books. But Alec is a cad who feeds her strawberries in a sexy way (this is always a good indicator of a costume-drama rotter), and soon Tess's trusting nature leads her into despair. Viewers who aren't devotees of the book might want to reach into their screens to give her a shake, but Arterton manages to keep the infuriatingly wistful Tess just the right side of annoying.
