Posted before as planetSDK as a codename before a name could be established in earlier Alpha stages. Now the project is ready to release a demo for general public consumption with no strings attached. We are following the phonetic alphabet for significant jumps in features as we develop them and are currently at Foxtrot.
There are no missions yet, or quests. But you do pilot your own space-craft and have full 360 degree control. You can use Hyperspace to travel between galaxies in one large sector of a bigger universe known only to the player as "Sector 42" by the locals. In this sector are 111 planetoids scattered among 35 galaxies. Each may be visited down to it's surface. Each having custom height maps and atmospheres sky domes depending on the conditions of that world.
The demo focuses on one galaxy "Mara Veermara" in particular. After the introduction and tutorial the player arrives here and you can find many other ships in orbit and following trade routes to other planets. There are some police, some pirates (watch out for them!), traders, and plain 'ol travelers hanging around. There is a docking bay for repairs to your ships hull and for refueling purposes. There is also a space station named after the galaxy that it resides in, you can scan this station like any of the planets and choose to land on it and get out of your ship and explore (no missions, or quests yet mind you still).
Why would we release a demo in this stage? To gain feedback from people like you, as a company we plan to release the game for under $10 with no DRM and all editing tools and access to our source code as much as the NeoAxis free SDK will allow. But we will provide all metadata to DLL's so users can make mods and create custom maps and worlds if they wish to become developers and not just players. The game is planned to be episodic so the first episode would only be a couple hours long at most for the player to get comfortable with controls and story and the universe they are in before the story ends with a cliffhanger and hopefully we can continue development if the game is a success (but it's far to early to think about this now.)
The official release date is December 2008, we are not sure in particular what day but it will be in December without a doubt and no delay. Please if you have any comments or suggestions of any kind then do not hesitate to reply and let us know your thoughts. We want to make a space adventure game for the masses that is fun and interactive with a interesting storyline and memorable characters that is also open source and DRM-free with no publisher backing of any kind (like EA). This is our first game and Indie title in every sense of the word. Our company is called Magrathean Technologies and we have financed this project from our own pockets, and are a 2 man team based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
What does Incognito mean?
Incognito ("unknown", from Latin incognitus) may refer to:
Incognito (comparative more incognito, superlative most incognito)
Without being known; in disguise; in an assumed character, or under an assumed title
Where did it come from?
An urban legend claims that cartographers labelled such regions with "Here be dragons". Although cartographers did claim that fantastic beasts (including large serpents) existed in remote corners of the world and depicted such as decoration on their maps, only one known surviving map, the Lenox Globe, in the collection of the New York Public Library , actually says "Here be dragons" (using the Latin form "HC SVNT DRACONES"). Terra incognita may also refer to the imaginary continent Terra Australis.
"One old man. One ship. 460,000 light-years from Earth..."
