A number of very special people walk this earth. Humans so rare and distinctive that we can’t help but be curious about how they got that way. They are astonishing variations on that masterpiece of bioengineering called the human body. Their unusual height, size or physical design puts them on the edge of the human envelope, setting them apart from the average population, making them truly extraordinary.
Now, in a new four-part series, we take an unprecedented look at the limits of the human condition by traveling Inside Extraordinary Humans. With episodes on DWARFISM, GIGANTISM, OBESITY and CONJOINED TWINS, we explore the amazing inner space of these remarkable people to understand what makes them the way they are.
How can conjoined twins attached at the head still live as individuals? What are the physical stresses of weighing 500 pounds? How do you live in an average size world when you are more than 7 feet tall? And what are the design challenges of being one quarter the size of everyone else? Using state of the art computer animation and dazzling 3D effects, we’ll delve deep inside these extraordinary bodies to discover the forces that have acted upon their DNA; examine the physical features to which they have adapted; and see how they are engineered differently from everyone else.
In each one-hour episode, we systematically examine a select few ‘extraordinary humans’ that have been shaped by one of these complex conditions. Their compelling personal stories – full of heartbreak and hope – are told through in-depth interviews and intimate footage of their daily lives. Doctors and researchers provide larger context as we investigate the theories, history and cutting edge science in order to reach a clear understanding of what is already known, and what questions still remain unanswered.
Inside Extraordinary Humans is first and foremost an investigation into what makes a human body ‘out of the ordinary,’ and by contrast, how ordinary human bodies work. But our subjects are more than just scientific curiosities. They are living, breathing people who, by living on the physical fringe, are helping to define just what it is to be human. So join us as we take an amazing journey… Inside Extraordinary Humans.
