Torrent description

From the booklet:

Dussek's music has never wholly slipped from pianists' repertoires as a handful of sonatinas was well known in the 19th century; but it is only comparatively recently that his real genius has become evident with the growing appreciation of his sometimes extraordinarily adventurous piano sonatas. Dussek forms an important link between the classical keyboard style of Haydn and Mozart and the grander early Romantic style of Beethoven, Schubert, Spohr, Weber and others. His concerti anticipate the 'military' style made famous by Hummel, and his fondness for dazzling octaves and runs was part of the shift in emphasis for public performers from entertaining an audience to astonishing it. Dussek's music, however, is more than just pyrotechnics, since he was particularly keen on surprising modulations and extending the harmonic range of his sonatas. These often anticipate not only the more familiar practices of Beethoven, but sometimes suggest many early Romantic practices, as was pointed out in a pioneering essay on his music by the English music-critic, Eric Blom, entitled the Prophecies of Dussek (Musical Opinion, 1927/8).
