Alcmene, prinses van Thebe, wacht op de terugkomst van haar ten strijde getrokken echtgenoot Amphitrion. De wellustige oppergod Zeus vergrijpt zich aan het zedige bruidje en verwekt bij haar een zoon. Deze zoon, de flink uit de kluiten gewassen Hercules, wordt verstoten door zijn moeder, benijd door zijn broer Iphicles en gehaat door Hera, de vrouw van Zeus. Zij richt al haar goddelijke toorn op Hercules omdat hij het levende bewijs is van de ontrouw van haar man. Gelukkig heeft de halfgod Hercules ook medestanders: zijn pleegvader Amphitrion, die verrukt is van het grote potentieel van de jongen; zijn trouwe metgezel Linus, die belooft Hercules roem te verspreiden; het blinde orakel Tiresias, die Hercules een grootse toekomst voorspelt; de schone nimf Deianeira, die heimelijk verliefd op hem is...en de priesteres Megara, die zijn vrouw wordt.

Description
Hercules is the enjoyable, full-length version of a truncated television miniseries starring Scots actor Paul Telfer in a revisionist telling of the mythical Greek heros life. Reputed to be the son of Zeus and Hera-worshipping priestess Alcmene (Elizabeth Perkins), Hercules is born a fraternal twin but half-brother to Iphicles (Luke Ford), son of Amphitryon (Timothy Dalton). Though he is raised under the latters protection and counsel, Hercules has an unrelenting streak of bad luck that finds him accused of murder, rape, and the killing of his own children. With such a black cloud hangingmore over him, Hercules seeks redemption through his famous Labors. Sean Astin, Leelee Sobieski, and Leeanna Walsman co-star in a complex story of intrigue, revenge, and hope, full of gleaming swords and fairly good special effects, including a passable centaur and multi-headed hydra.
