Het idyllische leventje van de van de charmante piraat Kapitein Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is afgelopen wanneer zijn aartsvijand, de doortrapte kapitein Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), zijn schip de Black Pearl steelt.
Niet veel later valt Barbossa de stad Port Royal binnen en ontvoert Elizabeth (Keira Knightley), de beeldschone dochter van de gouverneur.
In een heldhaftige poging haar te redden en de Black Pearl terug te veroveren, vormt Jack een team met Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), een vriend van Elizabeth, die heimelijk tot over zijn oren verliefd op haar is.
Will weet echter niet dat een vervloekte schat ervoor heeft gezorgd dat Barbossa en zijn bemanning voor eeuwig moeten leven als levende doden. Hoe versla je een vijand die al dood is?
