TV-serien, som gick på BBC från 1969 till 1974, skapades, skrevs och framfördes av Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones och Michael Palin. Som svagt uppbyggd som en sketchshow men med en innovativ ström av medvetenhet (och med hjälp av Terry Gilliams animationer), tänjde de på gränserna för vad som ansågs acceptabelt, både vad gällde stil och innehåll.
