Peter Shaffers magnificant play. Its plot enlarges on Alexander Pushkins work Mozart and Salieri itself based on rumours recorded in Beethovens conversation books current in Vienna at Salieris death. But this was just the vehicle. Shaffers great achievement was to conjure up Vienna Mozart, and to make Mozarts art seem fresh minted.

This is the National Theatres production. The Criterion Theatres production used a slightly different version of the text.
