Gotenhafen, 1945. Tienduizenden mensen zijn in deze havenstad gestrand, doordat ze op de vlucht zijn voor het aanstormende Rode Leger. De jonge scheepskapitein Hellmut Kehding (Kai Wiesinger) krijgt opdracht om met de \"Wilhelm Gustloff\" ongeveer 1500 soldaten en zoveel vluchtelingen als mogelijk naar Kiel te brengen. Onder de vluchtelingen bevinden zich Lilli Simoneit (Dana Vávrová), haar 16-jarige zoon Kalli (Willi Gerk) en de hoogzwangere Marianne (Anja Knauer). Ze hopen net zoals de duizenden anderen met de \"Gustloff\" in veiligheid gebracht te worden. In Gotenhafen ontmoet Hellmut Kehding ook weer zijn grote liefde Erika Galetschky (Valerie Niehaus). Zij werkt onder het strenge regiem van Berta Burkat (Ulrike Kriener) als Marva in de vluchtelingenopvang. Hellmut doet alles binnen zijn vermogen, om ook haar op het schip te krijgen

Joseph Vilsmaier\'s two-part TV movie focuses on the tragic events surrounding the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German passenger ship, at the end of World War II. On 30 January 1945, Captain Hellmuth Kehding was in charge of the ship, evacuating wounded soldiers and civilians trapped by the Red Army. Soon after leaving the harbor of Danzig, it was hit by three torpedoes from the Soviet submarine and sank in less than an hour...
