Description:
It's hard to know which spread faster - the flames of the
Great Fire of London or the prejudice-fuelled suspicion as
to who started it. So says the latest instalment of the
history-revisited strand Bloody Foreigners that explains
why the familiar tale of the accident in 1666 may not be
the whole story. Computer effects chart an aerial route of
the conflagration's progress (picture a smoke-damaged
Google Street View), while historians discuss how Dutch
and then French residents in the capital came in for
violent retribution. Some of the reconstructions look a bit
unconvincing - one baker under attack resembles Bradley
from EastEnders in a blond wig - but it's interesting to see
how the blame game continued to smoulder long after the
inferno had been extinguished.
