Opening Statement







Jackson Browne has been a staple of American music since the 1970s. A prolific writer and singer, he's had such hits as "Running On Empty," "Doctor My Eyes," and "Somebody's Baby" (the theme song from the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High.) Browne has also written hits for The Eagles, played famous benefit concerts such as "No Nukes," and jammed on stage with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, and Bonnie Raitt. After a long wait, Jackson Browne: Going Home has finally been released on DVD.



Facts of the Case







In 1994 the Disney Channel premiered Jackson Browne: Going Home, a documentary/concert focusing on Jackson's songwriting, musicianship and live performances. The documentary contained rare interviews, performances and footage spanning over 25 years of his career. Interviews conducted with Don Henley, David Lindley, David Crosby, Graham Nash and Bonnie Raitt are interwoven between concert footage and Jackson talking about the history of his songs and his thoughts on music.



The Evidence







On a whim, I picked up Jackson's last album to date "Looking East" during my college years. I was somewhat impressed with what I heard, but it only had a few songs on it that I would listen to. As is the case with many of my favorite artists/albums, it took me a while to actually listen to them and "get into" the music. However, once I started listening to Browne's albums, I really started listening to them (not as much as The Backstreet Boys, but pretty close). Now, on the side of sounding really deep and pontificating, I started to understand his lyrics. I started to see how they seemed to parallel my own life. I realize this is nothing new. I know that almost everyone out there has had this same experience when they have listened to a certain album or artist (and the Spice Girls DON'T count.) But, only second to Bruce Springsteen, I am a lifelong Jackson Browne fan (unless he does an O.J. Simpson on us). No one knows how to put down in song the happiness, longings or pain of the heart as well as Jackson does.







With the release of Jackson Browne: Going Home, fans have a chance to see one of the industries most personal rockers up close and talkative, chatting about his craft, his life and his friendships. Along the way, we get to hear live and rare versions of such songs as "I'm Alive," "Your Bright Baby Blues," "Lives In The Balance," "Too Many Angels," "Running On Empty," "Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate," and many more. Also included are never before released songs such as "Bird's Of St. Marks," "You Can Get It If You Really Want It," and the Bob Dylan classic "All Along The Watchtower."







Jackson Browne: Going Home is presented in full-frame and includes a Dolby 5.1 sound mix. Full-frame was the original aspect ratio for this documentary, so no complaints from the peanut gallery. The video is sharp for what the format and transfer are, and the sound is great. There is some grain on a few of the performance shots, but many were from the '70s, so we'll just let that slide. It's called "ambiance." This is a wonderful DVD to own if you have a great sound system at home. I don't, but I am a schoolteacher, so I have an good excuse.







The DVD for this is nothing special in the way of extras, as all it contains is the documentary. When you really get down to it, that is all you need on this DVD. What are you going to have, a commentary track by Jackson Browne talking about what he was thinking about when he was playing his guitar solo to "In The Shape Of A Heart?" I don't think so. There is a scene selection, which goes in order of the songs performed. Also there is an audio option for either Dolby 5.1 or something called PCM 2.0. I have no idea what that is, but if you want it, you got it baby! [Editor's Note: PCM is uncompressed audio, not unlike what you'd find on a CD.]

You know, this may be the only time you won't hear me complain about anything on a DVD. Jackson Browne: Going Home is really a nice package. It has no extras, but I can't think of anything else you need on this.



Closing Statement







If you're a Jackson Browne fan like myself, this is a must for your collection. Interesting and informative, with great performances throughout by Jackson and friends, this is a great DVD to own. But, as with most music DVDs, if you're not a fan, or even a moderate fan, then you'll want to pass on this (for instance, you won't catch me renting anything N'SYNC releases, but I'm a strange 'lil pickle that way.)

Yeah, it IS 15 years old, but everything here is still valid. My 1 squawk is that, like MOST music documentaries, you don't get to hear all of the songs all the way through. Then again, that's why it's a documentary rather than a concert film. Nonetheless, the interviews (with Jackson as well as with people like Bonnie Raitt, David Crosby and Graham Nash among others) provide a pretty nice insight into just what makes the man tick.
