OTHER NOTES:

Released in the Fall of 2000, All That You Can't Leave Behind was heralded by the critics as U2's third great masterpiece after The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. The album was released at the end of October in the midst of a strong promotional campaign which saw U2 making stops at several radio and TV appearances. The album was released in mp3 format on the internet two weeks prior to the actual release of the album. These mp3s were taken from a promotional copy of the CD circulated by Island Records.

In Japan, Australia and the UK, CD prices for domestic CDs are much more expensive than the price of imports from other countries. In an attempt to get buyers to buy CDs made in their own countries, The Ground Beneath Her Feet was pressed onto the CD as the last track of the CD. In the US consumers also had a choice of which copy to buy the night of release, one with a "Summer Rain" bonus disc, or one with an "Always" bonus disc. Interscope was not releasing singles in the US, so this was the only commercially available source for these songs at that time in the US.

After the album had been released for a few months, Interscope made another push by releasing the album with a third bonus disc, this time the bonus disc was "Big Girls Are Best". This is the harder of the three double releases to find as it was a limited promotion.

All That You Can't Believe spawned the Elevation tour, which started in Florida in March 2001 and finished back there in December of 2001. The tour was one of the most successful tours of the year, and also produced two live DVDs, something previously unheard of from U2. After struggling with critics throughout the PopMart tour and beyond, U2 was back, and at the top of their game.

From u2wanderer:

- Walk On: The "Single Version" of Walk On was also referred to as the Nigel Goodrich Mix during the pre-release period. This version is very similar to the version found on the America: A Tribute to Heroes compilation, with the extended Hallelujah chorus at the end of the song. It is not the same version as the "Edit" found on the earlier Canadian single.

- The Hands That Built America: The version featured on the soundtrack is more celtic sounding with the addition of the violin and tin whistle by two of the Corrs sisters. This is the third version of the song, as the versions on the album, and on the DVD are both different in sound.

- U2 performs "Peace on Earth / Walk On" live on September 21, 2001 from London, England. U2's performance was captured very late in the evening. It featured U2 with various guests including David Stewart, Natalie Imbruglia, and Morleigh Steinberg, contributing to the song. This performance of the song garnered U2 a Grammy nomination for "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group" at the 2003 awards.

SOUNDBITES:

'It was tough at times. There were dark moments. We chose to record in Dublin so you have to go home, deal with that leak in your roof as well. Danny thought it was interfering with making the record.' -Larry

'Bono's lyrics this time, in a sense, they're less poetic, less romantic and more real. To me they're much more about where he's coming from and what he's dealing with. I think this record has a great tenderness. And I'm sure it addresses the way he feels about the commitment to the band and to his family, to his children and Ali.' -Adam

'From the beginning we were excited when music met the real world, and, going into this, we reckoned that people aren't buying rock records any more because of this progressive rock lurgy, which is on the rise, where the single has been forgotten. In our heads we've written 11 singles for this record.' -Bono

'Pop music often tells you everything is OK, while rock music tells you that it's not OK, but you can change it. There's a defiance in rock music that gives you a reason to get out of bed in the morning. Most pop music doesn't make you want to get out of bed, I'm sorry to say. It puts you to sleep.' -Bono

'It was inspired by a Burmese leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, and her struggle for free elections in Burma. She left the comfort of her home in Oxford, as an academic, and her family and her son and her husband, and went to do the right thing for her people. And it was just one of the great acts of courage in the 20th century. And it's continuing into the 21st century - she's been under house arrest for some time now, and people get, you know, we all get very worried about how she's doing. At first, I was writing it from the point of view of her family, or her son, you know, her husband, and then in the end I kept it a little abstract and just let it be a love song about somebody having to leave a relationship for the right reasons.' -Bono, talking about the song Walk On, in an interview with Sonicnet.com.

Walk On is dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi.

Find out more about the struggle for democracy in Burma by visiting www.burmacampaign.org.uk.

'Elevation" is an acidic kicker that's mildly reminiscent of the tripped-out tone of earlier albums "Pop" and "Achtung Baby," in that it deftly intermingles forceful rock elements with jittery hip-hop-derived beats and a swirl of distorted guitar/keyboard lines.' -Billboard.Com

Bono told Rolling Stone that Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of was inspired by the mysterious death of INXS singer Michael Hutchence, and that the pair discussed suicide prior to his death and decided it was "pathetic".

'We discussed suicide a few times and we both agreed how pathetic it was.' He said they had 'kinda promised each other' neither would ever kill themselves.

'Stuck In A Moment... is an argument,' he said. 'It's a row between mates. You're kinda trying to wake them up out of an idea. In my case it's a row I didn't have while he was alive. I feel the biggest respect I could pay to him was not to write some stupid soppy fucking song, so I wrote a really tough, nasty little number... slapping him around the head. And I'm sorry, but that's how it came out of me.'

'This tastes very sweet. You think to yourself, you're a rock band, you don't need the pop charts, but you do need the pop charts. Singles are what makes rock sharp, and we've not been great at singles. I can't tell you how excited we feel, we've been around for a while and to hear this song on the radio, it feels very special.' -Bono to BBC Radio One when Beautiful Day went to No.1 in the UK

'It was actually a difficult mix, just trying to get it 'in the boat,' so to speak. It was this extraordinary, beautiful thing - like a beautiful marlin that they catch off the coast of Florida, you know? You could break your arm getting it into the boat. It was a bit like that.' -Bono, on the recording of Beautiful Day
