U2

THE RATTLE AND HUM COLLECTION

2CD REMASTERED EDITION

(FAN-MADE COMPILATION)

COMMENTS:

In 2000 I decided to make 2 collections: "The Joshua Tree Collection" and "The Rattle And Hum Collection".

These are my favourite U2 albums, so I wanted to have all the A-Sides & B-Sides together.

Of course, on that time, no Deluxe Editions or Remastered Editions existed, so I had to normalize all the tracks with Sound Forge because the volume on both albums are very low. So, I took some tracks of "The Best of 1980-1990" just to see the volume difference between the album tracks and the best of remastered tracks and then applied the normalization plugin.

When I saw the "official" 2007 Joshua Tree Remastered/Deluxe Edition I couldn't believe it and I also wonder why did they take so long to do it?

Now, with the Rattle and Hum Collection is different because it does not exist yet, so I think you'll really enjoy this compilation. All the tracks were normalized with Sound Forge. I took some tracks of the Best of edition to see how much "normatization" should I use on the new tracks. Hope you like it.

I forgot to say that both compilations were made from scratch again. I ripped all the tracks again and made new artwork.

By the way, The Joshua Tree Collection is here:

LINEAGE:

Lineage 1: Silver CDs --> EAC (Secure Mode, offset corrected) --> WAV (44100 Hz / 16 bits / Stereo) --> Sound Forge (Normalize) --> CD Wave Editor[*] --> FLAC frontend --> FLAC (level 6)

Lineage 2: Silver DVD --> DVD Audio Extractor --> English AC3 (48kHz / 2Ch) [**] --> WAV (PCM Uncompressed Wave / 48000 Hz / 16 bits / Stereo) --> Sound Forge (Downsample to 44100 Hz & Normalize) [***] --> FLAC frontend --> FLAC (level 6)

[*] I had to use CD Wave Editor only for the Rattle And Hum album. I ripped it as an "image file + cue sheet" so I can then normalize the full file with Sound Forge (and not individual tracks). So, CD Wave Editor was then used to split the file track by track with no SBE's. (Sector Boundary Errors)

[**] For the purists: the original DVD does not contain an LPCM track, that's why I had to use the AC3 2Ch track which is "technically" considered a lossy source. And I said technically because the audio frequency on this DVD reaches 21 kHz and it's constantly. Just for you to know, a CD reaches frequency up to 22 kHz.

[***] Again for the purists: I decided to downsample to 44100 Hz / 16 bits because this is the only supported samplerate & bitrate if you want to play the tracks on an standalone CD player.

NOTES:

Rattle and Hum is the name of both an album and a companion motion picture recorded by Irish rock band U2. Both were released in 1988.

The album, which was made following the band's 1987 Joshua Tree Tour, is a mix of live recordings and new songs. To a greater extent than their previous album, The Joshua Tree, the band play roots rock, blues-rock, folk rock, and country music. The film documents the band's Joshua Tree Tour of the United States and the band's experiences with American music. Although the album and motion picture were intended to represent the band paying tribute to rock legends, critics said that U2 were trying to place themselves amongst the ranks of these artists.

Rattle and Hum was the follow up to The Joshua Tree, which had been one of the most successful albums of the 1980s. But Rattle and Hum was more than an album, it was a mismash of live material mixed with new studio songs. It was a double vinyl LP. It was a movie. It was a book. And to many it was an overload.

But the album was a success. It went to the top of the charts around the world upon release. It spawned four successful singles, all of which were backed by new b-sides. The film played in theatres for weeks, and did quite respectable for itself. Not a Hollywood blockbuster, but it did just fine.

Rattle And Hum was released as a companion 2-LP set to the Phil Joanou-directed film of the same name. The album highlighted live performances from U2's successful 1987-88 Joshua Tree tour as well as additional songs recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis. A five-song CD known as Excerpts from Rattle and Hum was released in the UK in 1989. Three of the songs were live versions taken from the movie - Bad, In God's Country, and With Or Without You. The other two songs were the versions from the album - Hawkmoon 269 and God Part II. A limited edition CD was released in Mexico as part of the Serie Millennium with a different picture sleeve while a Colombian release of Rattle and Hum featured a different back cover. Stranger still, the New Zealand LP was mispressed as a black vinyl mixed with about 40% brown vinyl swirls.

The album reached No.1 in the UK. In the US, it peaked at No.1 on the album charts and No.39 on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. It was certified as multi-platinum by the RIAA with 5 million units sold. In Switzerland, Rattle And Hum reached No.1 on the album charts and stayed in the charts a total of 27 weeks and was certified Double Platinum. Rattle And Hum was voted Best Album by Rolling Stone readers and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Group Performance. Production Credits Producer: Jimmy Iovine

"Desire," "Angel of Harlem", "When Love Comes to Town", and "All I Want Is You" were released as singles.

All tracks were produced by Jimmy Iovine, except "Heartland", a left-over from The Joshua Tree that was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

"Angel of Harlem", "Love Rescue Me" and "When Love Comes to Town" were recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and many others also recorded.

All of the studio tracks apart from "Heartland" were performed in concert on the Lovetown Tour, which began almost a year after Rattle and Hum's release.
