Torrent description

Richard has a BA Hons in Fine Art and worked as a Painter and Print Maker for some time before becoming involved in digital art. After following an HND course in 3D Modelling and Animation he spent a number of years working for Maxon UK as a Technical Support Manager and Production Manager. He is currently working as a Freelance 3D Artist.

Description:

Part 1 starts with a brief introduction to the project that includes a .mov of the finished animation. The project shows how to create, texture and light an animated folding carton set in a white environment. I'd hope that a beginner would be able to follow the tutorial series although there is plenty in it for the more experienced user. Although the use of Mocca’s morph tool is used in a later part of the tutorial an alternative method using PLA is also explored and since the bones are from the core Cinema 4d, the Mocca module is not strictly necessary to complete the series. In this section the carton is created from a simple editable cube, with separate surfaces. The extrude tool is used to extend the cube for the top flaps and a tab. It is then accurately unfolded using the rotate tool with altered modelling axis, to form a flattened version of the carton.

Part 2 In this tutorial a simple rig is created, for folding up the carton, using the bone deformer, that is included with Cinema 4D R11.The bones are positioned accurately using snap settings. Selection and restriction tags are employed to limit and control how the bones deform the mesh. The bones are formed into an hierarchy in order to facilitate the folding of the carton.

Part 3 A simple animation is recorded of the initial folding up of the carton, using HPB settings in the coordinates for the bones. Just two keyframes are recorded for all of the bones. These keyframes are then adjusted in the timeline so that the sides of the box fold up sequentially.

Part 4 The animation of the initial folding of the carton becomes more elaborate in this section of the tutorial. Working in the timeline, additional keyframes are added and f curves adjusted in order to create a more interesting and dynamic animation.

Part 5 Materials are created and applied to the inside and outside of the carton. A bitmap from the project file being used for the outside of the carton. Tag commands are used to adjust the texture tag and a stick texture, tag is utilised.

Part 6 A copy of the carton is created and the bones removed to facilitate setting up the carton for use with morph tags or PLA for the second part of the animation where the top of the carton is folded up. The visibility of the two cartons is animated so that the boned carton appears for the first part of the animation and the new one for the second. Additional edges are added to the model using the knife tool and point selection tags are created.

Part 7 The morph tag, from the Mocca module is used to animate the top of the carton folding up. An alternative method using PLA is also explored, which will be useful for anyone that doesn’t have the Mocca module. As with the animation of the bones much of the animation is created in the timeline using f curves, (or bias settings in the case of PLA), and adding key frame.

Part 8 3 point lighting, a background and a floor are created to give a pure white environment by using compositing tags. The initial appearance of the carton is made to look pleasing by the use of transparency and a compositing tag.
