Misaki Suzuhara is a sixth grader who has just moved to Tokyo to live with her aunt. She stumbles across a merchandising phenomenon known as Angelic Layer in which a person can purchase a doll and custom design it. Once their doll is finished, they can link to it through new technology and have it move however they want, as long as its within the confines of a field known as a "layer." In these fields there are battles to see who is the best at Angelic Layer that occur at tourist traps or at special tournaments; Misaki meets a strange man known only as Icchan who gets her involved in the games. The man for some reason believes that she has high potential to become one of the greatest players of all time.

Misaki Suzuhara è una ragazzina appena trasferitasi a Tokyo, la quale, arrivata alla stazione, si perde tra la moltitudine di persone che affollano il luogo. Mentre cercava di ritrovare la strada giusta, si fermò a guardare un maxi schermo che trasmetteva un incontro di lotta tra bambole antropomorfe. Il bello è che vinse quella più piccola. Misaki chiese ad un ragazzino informazioni a riguardo ed egli rispose che questo gioco si chiama Angelic Layer.
Appassionatasi, la ragazza decide di comprare una bambola tutta sua: in questo momento conosce Icchan (Ichiro Mihara), il quale le consiglia l'acquisto dell'Angel Egg nel negozio specializzato chiamato Piffle Princess. L'ovetto una volta schiuso mostrò l'angel vero e proprio che Misaki chiamò con il nome di Hikaru (in onore di Hikaru Shido, una delle tre protagoniste di Magic Knight Rayearth) ed iniziando così il suo addestramento e partecipando a molteplici scontri con altre bambole.
