Forrest Gump is a 1994 American comedy-drama film based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom. The film, directed by Robert Zemeckis, stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn, and Gary Sinise. The story is of Forest Gump, a simple man hailing from Alabama, and his journey through life meeting historical figures, influencing popular culture, and experiencing firsthand historic events of the late 20th century.


Liberamente ispirato all'omonimo romanzo di Winston Groom del 1986, Forrest Gump tratta dell'intensa vita di un uomo dotato di uno sviluppo cognitivo inferiore alla norma.


The film differs substantially from Winston Groom's novel on which it was based. Filming took place in late 1993, mainly in Georgia and North and South Carolina. Extensive visual effects were used to incorporate the protagonist into archived footage as well as for developing other scenes. An extensive soundtrack was featured in the film, and its commercial release made it one of the top selling albums of all time.

Released in the United States on July 6, 1994, Forrest Gump was well received by critics and became a commercial success as the top grossing film in North America released that year. The film ended up earning over $677 million worldwide during its theatrical run. The film garnered multiple awards and nominations, including Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, People's Choice Awards, and Young Artist Awards, among others. Since the film's release, varying interpretations have been made of the film's protagonist and its political symbolism. In 1996, a themed restaurant opened based on the film, and has since expanded to multiple locations worldwide. Although a screenplay was developed on Groom's second novel, as of 2009, no sequel has been officially greenlit.



Il film spazia su trent'anni di storia degli Stati Uniti: Forrest comincia a narrare il suo commovente racconto, che inizia nella metà degli anni cinquanta, cioè quando egli stesso era un bambino, mentre la sua storia finisce approssimativamente nel 1982. Durante questi anni Forrest conoscerà Elvis Presley, John F. Kennedy, John Lennon, George Wallace e Richard Nixon, stabilirà un nuovo clima di pace tra Stati Uniti e Cina, diventerà una stella del football e parlerà del Vietnam a un raduno hippy, senza però rendersi realmente conto di quanto questo sia straordinario.
Forrest Gump è stato accolto in modo estremamente positivo sia dalla critica sia dal pubblico, dominando gli Oscar del 1995, portando a casa sei statuette, sfiorando il record di nomination di Eva contro Eva e Titanic (14) e classificandosi al 40º posto nella classifica dei 250 migliori film redatta voto per voto dagli utenti di IMDb.
Il film ebbe anche un enorme impatto sulla cultura popolare: frasi memorabili come «stupido è chi lo stupido fa» sono tuttora usate nel linguaggio di tutti i giorni, così come la frase «corri, Forrest, corri!» che è talora usata scherzosamente in situazioni d’impellente fretta. Lo stesso Tom Hanks riadatterà una frase del suo personaggio nel suo discorso alla cerimonia degli Oscar.
