Preface



The Third Edition of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine represents a most ambitious and comprehensive undertaking for both myself and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. In order to organize this wealth of information and images in an accessible manner, a new format has been developed to facilitate an understanding of the relationship between normal and pathoanatomy, and the changes found in specific pathologic disorders.

New features include:

One of the most comprehensive collections of color illustrations of orthopaedic pathoanatomy
A how-to “checklist” for interpreting MR studies of the joints
Pearls and Pitfalls to emphasize and reinforce critical information throughout a chapter
Detailed and comprehensive figure legends that not only describe an image but provide information and novel concepts about a disorder.
In Volume I, Hubert Lejay and Thomas Schubert contributed chapters on orthopaedic-specific technological advances and surface coil development providing state of the art discussions on these evolving fields. The chapter on the hip incorporates the most recent concepts of femeroacetabular impingement, high resolution imaging of the labrum, and the stellate lesion and plica of the hip. The chapter of the knee affords an in-depth insight into diagnosis of meniscal tear patterns including root tears, new concepts in cruciate and collateral ligament injuries, and injuries of the posterolateral corner and the tibiofibular ganglia. The chapter on the ankle and foot is the result of a 25-year collaboration with orthopaedic surgeon Richard Ferkel and showcases guidelines for the diagnosis of soft tissue impingement, osteochondral lesions of the talus, and turf toe. Two new chapters on neuropathies of the upper and lower extremities were coordinated by Zehava Rosenberg and complement the discussion of specific nerve entrapments introduced in other chapters. A chapter on articular cartilage pathology, authored by Hollis Potter, is introduced in the context of chondral resurfacing techniques and T2 mapping.

In Volume II, the chapter on the shoulder elucidates important concepts such as the biceps labral complex, the inferior glenohumeral ligament labral complex, the rotator cuff interval, biceps instability, anterosuperior instability (ASI), and the glenohumeral joint in the throwing athlete (dead arm syndrome, GIRD, and the posterior peelback lesion). The chapter on the elbow chapter reflects the latest information on the role of the LUCL and RCL together as the essential lesion in the development of posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) of the elbow and the role of the anterior bundle of the medial collateral ligament complex. The chapter on the wrist and hand draws on the collaborative experience of Gordon Brody and David Lichtman to describe a range of concepts including carpal instabilities, intrinsic ligament pathology, DRUJ abnormalities, Kienböck\'s disease, and SLAC and SNAC lesions. The finger chapter is a unique dedicated effort to explore the detailed anatomy and pathology of both the finger and thumb, authored by Jean-Luc Drapé. Marrow and bone and soft tissue tumors are also included in the second volume in a chapter contributed by Miriam Bredella.

Eight-channel phased array coils and examples of 3T images are used throughout the text for both normal MR anatomy and case pathology. The talented Salvador Beltran has successfully incorporated the recent developments afforded by the advent of arthroscopic experience in orthopaedics and sports medicine, an opportunity not available to previous medical illustrators.
