Well, truth be told I'm not too sure how this torrent is going to be received by The Dime Community. One of the first things that I did when I joined this site was to search for both Brian Setzer solo and The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Either I still haven't figured out how to search effectively on Dime (a definite possibility) or there's just not a whole lot of Setzer that's been introduced as of yet. If you folks dig this I have plenty more BSO as I personally think that not only can this guy tear up a Gretsch guitar but his band and song selection are pretty darn spiffy. I'll admit to having grown up in a house where my parental units always had a classic Sinatra album going and thus am quite familiar with a young Quincy Jones and The Count Basie Band. In many ways the BSO mimics that classic Big Band Sound of a bygone era.

I recall seeing Setzer back in 1994 on Letterman where he told a story of being asked to come by and jam with a group of neighbors who had some semblance of an instrumental band practicing in a nearby garage. On a lark he grabbed a favorite hollow body Gretsch, an old tube amp and took them up on their offer. Apparently this is where the idea for a rocking guitar fronting a big band was born.

From what I've read, every promoter in the country thought Setzer had gone around the bend. A loud guitar playing with a Tonight Show type band? Even more so, that skinny kid from the Stray Cats with all the tattoos playing rockabilly with a horn section? Yes and yes. In these early days you can hear how hungry they all are to prove themselves, especially Brian. After touring the many dives that would book him stateside, and many successful tours overseas in Japan where Setzer is looked upon as a God, the BSO have made quite a name for themselves.

Finally, if you've never heard this guy pick a guitar you need to give him a listen. Kind of like when I first heard that Roy Clark was one hell of a guitarist, all I could think of was the canned laugh track backing up the worst jokes ever written on a terribly bad show, Hee Haw. When I saw the guy play, Hee Haw was immediately forgotten. Much the same can be said with Setzer. He's far from that angry youth who could only play 'Rock This Town' or 'Stray Cat Strut'. I've got a couple of officially released DVDs of the BSO and it's really cool to see how well he's mastered his collection of vintage (most from 1959) Gretsch guitars. Like Freddie King kicking it on the instrumental 'Hideaway', check out Setzer doing 'Sleepwalk'. Not too shabby.

Please have fun listening and as always don't convert to MP3 or sell. That's not cool and is the very essence of bad karma.

Regards,

DWP
