Der skrupellose Buchdetektiv Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) verdient seinen Lebensunterhalt mit dem Auffinden literarischer Raritäten, die er nicht immer mit lauteren Mitteln an sich bringt und an den Meistbietenden verkauft. Ein besonders interessanter Fall erwartet Corso, als er von dem zwielichtigen Teufelsbuch-Sammler Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) angeheuert wird, um die Echtheit einer Ausgabe von Die neun Pforten ins Reich der Schatten anhand der zwei anderen existierenden Exemplare zu überprüfen. Auch wegen der horrenden Summe, die Balkan ihm bietet, willigt Corso ein. Bald findet er allerdings heraus, dass viel mehr hinter den Büchern steckt als er dache. Auch andere Personen machen Jagd auf die Bücher und die gehen sogar über Leichen...
