Unsettling Hillbilly Noir music of dark themes and dead on big guitar sounds: Indiana's uncompromising singer/songwriter Rand Reynolds has hurled his Hillbilly Noir format furiously forward with yet another cd that is successfully ambitious in its scope, and may well be an aesthetic watermark for this new and, obviously, driven artist. Patient Master, with its underlying menace and desolate overtones, is frightening, revelatory, and is clearly carved from Reynolds' own clear visions and startling observations. This is a work that speaks...no, screams volumes. As Reynolds says, "The characters are all prisoners of their vices: Strippers, dope fiends, alcoholics, serial killers, wife beaters, washed up country singers, finger pointers, generic sinners and saints who just kept on trying -- they all know their masters are patient, unrelenting and, at times, disguised." Patient Master is deeply resonant, powerful and profoundly unsettling.
