Hollywood star Peter Lorre came to fame thanks to his distinctive voice and the ghoulish villains he often played. This new play relates a curious event that occurred near the end of the actor's life when young immigrant Eugene Weingand went to a US court to change his name to Peter Lorre, ostensibly because people found it difficult to pronounce his name and he looked a little like the performer. It may sound too bizarre to be true but verbatim extracts from the court proceedings are used to illustrate the story. This is no dry courtroom tale, as there's also touching insight into Lorre's disappointment with the trajectory of his career following his star-making role as a child killer in Fritz Lang's M. Stephen Greif - no mean villain himself when he appeared as Travis in BBC cult sci-fi series Blake's 7 plays Lorre and does a fantastic job of impersonating the man's unique delivery.
