Drama Name: Jaadu Teri Nazar, Marathi
Writer : Ratnakar Matkari
Director : Mangesh Kadam
Cast : Prashant Damle, Satish Tare, Manisha Joshi, Salakha Pawar
Loosely based on Shakespeare’s romantic comedy A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, writer Ratnakar Matkari is quick to point out that JADOO TERI NAZAR is neither an adaptation nor a translation of the original.
He however calls his play, “a tribute to Shakespeare” as references to the bard’s ideas of love keep surfacing during the play. The element of magic is retained in this modern version where the fairy king is characterized as an ophthalmologist (Prashant Damle) and Puck of the original becomes Prakash (Satish Tare), the eye specialist’s friend-confidante-compounder.
Together they have come to possess magical eye-drops, which they administer on the loved ones around them. Confusion in matters concerning love thus calls for one comic event after the other. According to Matkari, Prashant Damle and Satish Tare are talented comic actors in their own right. As a result the duo makes a good combination.
Tare as Prakash also plays the role of a narrator as he reflects on the actions of the other characters and comments on them. Songs and music make this comedy further entertaining. Around 10 to 12 songs written by Ratnakar Matkari and Shrirang Godbole are set to music designed by Ashok Patki.
