"RECORDED IN 1990 AVAILABLE NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!
The first recording with Diana Krall from 1990, singing and playing on all tracks. A historic document in the career of an award winning international super-star! This is a must have recording for all Diana Krall fans!
Vince Benedetti met Diana Krall in 1988, while he was driving a taxi in Switzerland. After a brief conversation about their respective Jazz backgrounds, Benedetti learned that Krall was working as a singer-pianist in one of Zurich's most established hotels. He went to see her play—and was astounded! He had discovered a great new voice. As Benedetti describes, "Here was a singer of depth and intensity who was able to convey it all with a breezy, laid-back phrasing—something normally assumed to be contradictory. Moreover, and this was critical to her delivery, Krall had developed a mature voice and swinging comping style, using good chord voicings and placing accents & fills in all the right places."
Heartdrops is a collection of light and airy, yet very melodic compositions, played by a line-up best suited for both the material and the overall sound. Krall's sensuous voice, her impeccable phrasing and, last but not least, her very competent piano and organ treatments add that particular flavor of suaveness to a program of well selected titles, most of them by Benedetti. "
It's not often that the earliest available recording comes out after the most recent one. I'm glad this album is available because I simply can't get enough of the fabulous Ms. Krall. On the other hand, the early album is at a disadvantage in a review when its star has shown so brightly afterwards.
The recording is quality jazz fare in my view. I was surprised by the exceptional quality of the musicianship. I mean Benedetti was a cab driver at the time. And even at this early point in her career, Diana possesses an instrumental and vocal mastery. But I wonder if I'd heard this CD first if I'd taken much notice. I can't say either way --I've only had it a week.
I think the main difference between this and her later work is Diana's choice of songs. Her subsequent recordings were of maybe a more interesting collection of writings. On the other hand this is the only recording I've heard where Diana shares the vocals, harmonizing here with guitarist Martien Oster. That alone is worth checking out. And though I adore her trademark solo vocals, this union works nicely. ~ Steve Rumley
Imagine Vince remembering this recording after Diana has become an international star and then deciding to release it. Imagine yourself buying the CD and listening to a young Diana playing and singing original material. What a rare opportunity! The CD is excellent and the sound is great. Diana is in good form and the harmony singing is a real treat. Do yourself a favor and get this CD. ~ Kenneth A Smith
