Unreported World - Railway Of Bones
Channel 4 - 29 February 2008

Reporter Sam Kiley travels to the Republic of Komi, 1,000 miles north of Moscow, to look at life in the frozen hinterland of Vladimir Putin's Russia. He arrives as parliamentary elections are taking place and has little difficulty finding locals being paid 400 roubles (ten pounds) to vote for Putin's "United Russia" party. Kiley trudges through the snow to a taxi, where a guilty-looking bloke is dishing out the bribes. While Kiley tries to challenge him, an orderly queue of would-be vote-sellers forms in the snow at the taxi door. It's a brilliant microcosm of a corrupt system, where, despite the country's growing wealth, huge sections of the population are still battling poverty, corruption and alcoholism
