NATURE: Countryfile
On: BBC 1
Date: Sunday 17th September 2006
Time: 11:00 to 12:00

The people and the stories at the heart of the British countryside. Comedian Jo Brand and wildlife photographer Chris Packham join John Craven in Greenwich to judge this year's Countryfile photographic competition, the theme of which is weather. Adam Henson heads further downstream to meet the last eel fisherman on the Thames and the farmer who works in the shadow of Canary Wharf.

Photographic competition
Twelve finalists were revealed on 17 September, although one has had to be withdrawn as it had been previously published.
You can phone vote for your favourite picture until midnight on 24 September. Calls cost 15p with BT – mobile and other network costs vary.
* See the finalists -
The person whose photo receives most votes wins £1000 worth of photographic equipment. Find out who that is on Sunday 8 October along with the judges' favourite photo.
The Countryfile Calendar 2007 goes on sale next month, in aid of the BBC's Children In Need appeal.

The historic border town of Berwick has been fiercely fought over by Scotland and England. Today, it's facing a new kind of invader – the American signal crayfish. This alien species has recently been found in an English tributary of the Tweed and poses a threat to the salmon fishing industry and biodiversity along the river.
The town has an association with the artist LS Lowry, now celebrated with a Lowry Trail. Nearby Chillingham is home to the unique Chillingham wild white cattle – sole survivors of herds that once roamed the forests of Britain.

Mediterranean tuna
Demand for raw fish to make sushi threatens to wipe out commercial stocks of Atlantic blue fin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea. Fishing fleets are exceeding their allowed catches. Industry insiders admit that some of the illegally caught fish may end up in coastal tuna 'ranches', where blue fin is kept alive for fattening up before being sold on. Tuna ranches have proliferated in the last 10 years and are big business.
The International Commission for the Conservation of the Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) is under pressure to take action at its annual meeting in November to protect blue fin tuna from commercial extinction.

Swan Upping
For 800 years the Queen's swans have been counted annually. Historically, 'Swan Upping' was done to claim birds for the Queen but now it's a conservation exercise, currently conducted by Dave Barber, the Queen's Swan Marker.

Scottish seafood trail
The west coast of Scotland has a new food trail to highlight the wealth of local produce being harvested from the sea.
John Slattery follows fish from sea to plate via the skilled hands of a top chef. A simpler highlight of the trail is a beach shack that claims to serve Scotland's best crab rolls.
