On the Western Front in April 1915, the rumour spread quickly: a Canadian soldier had been found crucified, using bayonets, to a barn door near Ypres (right, a possible scenario). Few soldiers had seen it; everyone believed it.

The "Crucified Soldier" became a symbol of First World War German atrocities, in keeping with the Allied propaganda against the enemy. The image was used to sell Liberty Bonds on the home front, became the inspiration for a now-lost Hollywood film, The Prussian Cur, and tied in neatly with stories of German soldiers routinely bayonetting babies and cutting off the hands of children.


The German government claimed the crucifixion never happened, and after the war it demanded evidence from the Canadian and British governments, which then tried to prove it did.

The first programme in Secret History's season looking at the First World War, The Crucified Soldier (Thurs 9pm C4), chronicles the story, presenting new evidence and assessing various other claims of German brutality.

The investigation in 1919 into the crucified soldier produced unconvincing findings. Some "eye-witnesses" had conflicting stories and investigators were never able to name the supposed victim. Urban myth emerged as the most likely explanation: it was presumed that the visual culture of Belgian Catholicism, and the fact that the crucifixion took place over the Easter period, provided fertile ground for the rumour.

That was until the papers of a British Red Cross nurse were unearthed. They recount a conversation with a wounded soldier who claims to have seen the crucified soldier and names him as Sgt Harry Band, from the Canadian 48th Highlanders. Documents held by the Band family also suggest that one of the most infamous stories from the Great War can now finally be pieced together.
