In the beginning, Rentaghost was the brainchild of the recently-deceased Fred Mumford (Anthony Jackson), who teamed up with the Victorian ghost Hubert Davenport (Michael Darbyshire) and the jester Timothy Claypole, who all took on various different jobs in each episode. Michael Staniforth, who played Claypole, also sang the theme song to the series.

When Season Five rolled around in 1980, things were to change as actor Michael Darbyshire died, Anthony Jackson declined to appear in the next series, leaving Michael Staniforth the sole original ghost; Davenport and Mumford's absences were explained at the start of the series by them having acquired permanent haunting jobs at a stately home. After Mumford's departure, the business was taken over by Harold Meaker and his wife Ethel, who suffered from the various problems the ghosts brought to their lives.
