STOP THE CLOCK!!!

A team of two contestants, always in the studio, had to use a library of (deliberately relevant) maps and reference materials to solve up to five clues, and communicating instructions via a radio link to a skyrunner who had the use of a helicopter. The contestants were given the first clue for free, the solving of which would lead to the location of the second clue and so on until a trinket or other significant object was found by solving the final clue. The contestants won a higher cash prize each time they solved a clue correctly. This was all done "against the clock". Even once the contestants had solved the final clue, the skyrunner still had to confirm they were correct, by reaching the final target.

In 2003, the BBC (God bless them) revived the Treasure Hunt format for a whole new generation.

Suzi Perry was the new skyrunner, giving Anneka Rice a run for her money, and Dermot Murnaghan the host, furthering his claims to be taken as the new Kenneth Kendall. He's in a studio with lots of reference books and lots of good-looking but useless props but, in the one concession to new technology, there are CD-ROMs and a multimedia computer (But no internet access, as that would make it too easy!). As well as trying to help out the contestants, Dermot also confirms the location of the clue - a role Kenneth took in the initial C4 series, which acted without an on-screen adjudicator. And we're assured that, no, Dermot hasn't been given the answers beforehand. He does have an earpiece so that the producers can shout out if the contestants are (literally) miles off course, but that's all.

It started with a week of UK based programmes but then we went all international with specials from all over the world.

In five days viewers went to far flung places such as San Francisco on Monday, Mexico City on Tuesday, New Zealand on Wednesday, Alice Springs on Thursday and Melbourne on Friday. All very beautiful to look at and happily, the show's still as much fun as it always was; some felt as if there was too much flying and not enough terra ferma hi-jinks early in the week.

The single biggest addition the new version of the show has bought along is that of having the treasure in the vicinity of the final clue. One of the biggest problems with the original of course was that if they get the fifth clue with only a few minutes to go you knew there would be no chance of them winning because the helicopter wouldn't get there in time. Now there is always a chance.

This was an excellent update to the classic Channel 4 series, but didn't get the chance it deserved from the BBC and it now reamins to fans of Treasure hunt as a distant memory of a rebirth that was never to be.... but if I ever win the lottery, Dermot and Suzi can expect a call, once i've bought my helicopter!

These rips are from a Video but were recorded from BBC2 when I was living in Holland, so the quality is not great. There was some intereference through the aerial in Haarlem, but as long as you are not nose to nose with your screen, you should enjoy these downloads. I've capped these for all the fans who have never seen the updated series.

Enjoy!
