In the beggining of the film is written ‘the rebetiko song was always the stray of vagabonds, illegal, marginal and rebellious greeks. But with the great fire of smyrna in 1922, thousand of minor asians, along them lot of great musicians, found themselves in a night in the refuge camps outside of athens. That was the time a solidarity was created among the immigrants and the vagabonds of pireus, called "magka tu pirea". From this mixture was first created the smirnaiki style of pireus, and later with the establishment of the bouzouki it was formed the rebetiko, an authentic folk musical style created by and for the poor people’.
Stavros Xarhakos is one of the most notorious composers in Greece.
He composed the music of the film, putting together the rebetiko and the more modern folk -laiko- song, the album its not like a revival but make you believe it comes from the "golden period" of the '30s, its a fact that the result was so good and authentic the one person told him that these songs were like the first ones wrotten by Tsitsanis and Vamvakaris.
For me these album is one of the best and takes one place on the pantheon, its very sentimental, often sad, rebetiko also has many eastern influences, you can imagine a local with smells of spice, tobacco but also hashis, heroin, the feeling of having lost your home and being poor, life is hard, but there was an unwritten code between this people, sure more noble than the rules of the hypocrites that govern us.
