In the Nazca Desert there is a huge drawing carved into the ground (70 metres in size)which shows a hummingbird with a long beak in flight. Did these rare birds once exist at the edge of the desert, or did the temperate zone once stretch far further than it does today? 1,500 years ago the swordbill was apparently an important part of shaman culture. It was regarded as a messenger from the gods - its beak extended as far as the peak of the Holy Mountain, to the golden orb of the sun... Juan Carloss art collection contains rare examples of colibri images. Juan Carlos is considered the expert on South Americas hummingbirds. The film focuses on Carloss book, his photographs and drawings, on his research expedition through various vegetation zones (which leads him from the rain forest and temperate regions to the snow line) - and also on the
mythology and the history of the special relationship between hummingbirds and human beings.
