While most software packages are trying to pack as many features as they can into one program, it's refreshing to find a program that does one thing and does it really well. Xara3D does just that.

Xara3D creates 3D headings and animations from text or imported vector objects. The interface is simple and easy to understand. It's small, too. The whole program installed is less than 2 megs although you'll find plenty of extra textures, fonts, and examples included on the program CD.

You start by entering your text and then you can experiment with the various effects which include extrusion, bevel, shadow, texture, animation, and lighting. When you're happy with the results, just adjust the display window to the desired size, and export the finished image to your desired format. That's really all there is to it!

In addition to all the text options you would expect, you also have options for adjusting the aspect ratio, line spacing, tracking, baseline shift, and kerning. You're not limited to working only with text, you can also import 2D vector outlines from Windows Metafiles, Xara, or Webster files.

Extrusion options allow you to change the color, reflectivity, front and back face, outline width, and depth. Bevel options gives you a number of different presets to choose from, as well as making adjustments for the corner style and bevel depth. You can add drop shadows and edit the transparency and blur. Apply textures to the object or the background from the 850 included textures, or your own collection. New in version 5 is the ability to change the attributes on a per-character basis.

Adjusting the lighting effects couldn't be simpler... once you display the lighting, just double-click on an arrow to alter the light color, click and drag to change the light direction, then fine tune the animation from a number of different effects. Full anti-alising, color reduction, and optimization options will ensure your exported images are of the highest quality and smallest possible file size.
