I'd been thinking of this series, and finally tracked down an old VHS copy. It was a bugger to rip and I thought--since I'd gone to the trouble--I'd put it up, in case anyone else wants it. (And just in time for Remembrance Day, no less.)
It holds up pretty well after all these years. (The acting is a little more overwrought than I recall, mostly.) I was a much younger person when this was broadcast in 1979, and remember it as quite affecting and poignant and emotional. It didn't quite have the same effect this time around--which, unfortunately, probably says more about how I've changed in the last thirty years.
Testament of Youth - Complete Series
Testament of Youth is widely regarded as one of television's truly great dramas. When it was originally broadcast in 1979, it won nine major awards, including British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) for Best Television Series and Best Actress for Cheryl Campbell.
The series is based on the first volume of the autobiography of Vera Brittain (1893-1970): writer, feminist, pacifist, and the mother of former Cabinet Minister Shirley Williams. It has been acclaimed for its description of the impact of the First World War on the lives of women and the civilian population of Great Britain, and is also considered a classic in feminist literature for its depiction of a woman's pioneer struggle to forge an independent career in a society only grudgingly tolerant of educated women.
Testament of Youth begins shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, when the intelligent and strong-willed Vera Brittain finally wins her battle for admission to Oxford. Life seems perfect, but the pleasures of university, a close social circle, and a newfound love abruptly come to an end. It was then that she realised that war wasn't the glorious adventure many young men thought it to be.
Vera will be indelibly scarred by shattering personal losses and the horrors of nursing on the frontline; but she rises from the ashes a prominent writer, feminist and activist. Afterwards she became strongly--and famously--associated with the peace movement, to which she was committed for the rest of her life.
Here is one of the most inspiring stories of a generation born to tragedy and triumph.
Starring Cheryl Campbell ("Chariots of Fire", "Pennies from Heaven", "William and Mary") and a nice cast of those face-you-can't-put-a-name-with types from the era (many of whom are now deceased).
