Why are the nation's babies getting bigger?
Britain’s Biggest Babies investigates the theory that junk food eating mothers are producing a nation of junk food loving children - who are being born big and are staying big.
The programme also reveals the shocking results of studies carried out by the Royal Veterinary College on pregnant rats who were fed junk food to see how it affected their unborn offspring.
CALL me a wimp, but fairly high on my list of things I hope I never have to do, you’ll find “giving birth to a 13lb baby”.
But that was the agonising experience endured by one of the mums we meet in tonight’s ITV1 documentary.
And this woman, Karen (who we find gearing up for the birth of another potential whopper), is by no means the only UK mum to have gone through such an ordeal.
We also meet Sara, from Liverpool, whose new-born son Joe tipped the scales at 14lb (and was wearing clothes for a seven-year-old when he was only two), plus Angela from Manchester, whose daughter Courtney weighed 10lb 9oz at birth – and, less than a year on, can already single-handedly wolf down a full helping from the local chippy.
The programme looks for potential reasons for these soaring birthweights, which many experts put down to a lousy diet.
But on a reassuring note, it also reminds us that we’ve a fair way to go before a new-born British baby beats the world record, poundage-wise.
That belongs to a baby in Siberia, who emerged into the world at an eye-watering 1st 3lbs.
