1 - Custer's last Stand
Air date: 23 February 2007

Originally posted by Grungebucket in September 2007, with this description:
Part one of a three-part BBC documentary series about the wild west.
The first in the series sheds new light upon the anathemised General Custer, questioning the standard view of him as an incompetent and vainglorious idiot and presenting him as an intelligent and ruthless man, whose last battle could easily have been a victory if things had gone as he'd planned.
A comment by Mark Wright http://blogs.thestage.co.uk/:
A nicely shot docudrama covering the legendary General Custer and his famous (but fatal) battle at Little Bighorn. As the first in a series covering other legends of the Wild West, it's very well done, although the central casting is bewildering - Toby Stephens? As General Custer? You are, as they say, having a laugh. Get past that, though, and this is a fine hour of television.
I noticed other touches like Packinpah-inspired images of bullet impact, decently dressed Indian children, an Irish violin tune accompanying the Indian attack on Custer. Then, there is the unconvincing flat acting of the Indians when conferring among themselves. I'd love to know how fat their American accent is when they're talking Sioux.

Fortunately, Custer and his men don't refer to their opponents as "Native Americans"; that PC term was coined many years after the Indians had been decimated, humiliated and deported to the reservations. Speaking of coinage, after the US nearly destroyed the Indians they became an object of national pride, deemed fit to feature on the nickel between 1913 and 1938 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Head_nickel).

This programme is interesting from an historical point of view (for instance, the portraying of Captain Benteen as being obstructive and giving false testimony), but also illustrates the importance of rules governing warfare, like the Geneva convention. We witness Custer performing and attempting acts that must be judged war crimes by today's standards. The political double-crossing by the US government is only mentioned as a context; this policy is an obvious crime against humanity. As the voice over mentions, for the Indians the Wild West was not wild at all, it was their home.

2 - Billy The Kid
Air date: 2 March 2007

Originally posted by Grungebucket in September 2007, with this description:
In the second of the series Billy the kid, the most notorious figure of the wild west, is on trial again... this time the world's three leading experts, re-examining old evidence and pondering letters from Billy the Kid that have never been seen before, try to determine just how guilty he was, and whether the then governor of New Mexico, Lew Wallace, really had promised Billy a pardon, and if so, why?
Was Billy the Kid the psychopathic killer history says he is or was he completely different from the legend that has built up around him?
Scott Matthewman (http://blogs.thestage.co.uk/tvtoday/2007/03/)
...this week we see the story of William Bonny, aka Billy the Kid. Over-earnest at times, I can't help thinking that this story would serve a full drama, or a full documentary, far better than this hybrid approach.
More central to the issue is for me what the three present-day legal experts remark in the programme: the nature of authority and law in territorial New Mexico at the time (all the forces of law were corrupt, including sheriff Brady); the Kid fought against that corruption; the Law itself used murder as a tool; governor Lew Wallace made a deal with the Kid to pardon him for killing sheriff Brady if he testified against a number of the bad guys; the Kid lived up to his part of the bargain; then Wallace dropped him like a hot potato.

3 - The Gunfight at the OK Corral
Air date: 9 March 2007

Originally posted by Grungebucket in September 2007, with this description:
The gun fight at the okay corral is, perhaps, the most famous shootout in history. In thirty seconds a new image in legend was born - the legend of the Righteous Lawman. But what was Wyatt Earp truly like? After the gunfight at the OK Corral Earp was not seen as a hero. He was charged with murder and put on trial for his life. Was he a "Righteous Lawman" fighting for justice and equality, or was he just a ruthless enforcer, hardly better than the outlaws he condemned to death without trial?
To cite once more Mark Wright (9 March 2007)
On the whole, this series has been quite good fun, and tonight attentions are turned to the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral. Apparently, the fight lasted less than 30 seconds (so why on earth did Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp biopic have to last longer than the run of The Mousetrap?). Liam Cunningham makes a quite convincing Earp. More please!
And here's a comment (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/824224.stm) on the relevance of this historical material for the US today:
In Arizona there's a tradition of gun-toting justice. The Wild West's most famous showdown, the gunfight at the OK Corral, is re-enacted here on a daily basis. Audiences love it, but it's a tradition of justice the Mexican Government says is dangerous in the hands of 21st century cowboys. "These apprehensions are being made with a show of force," says Mexican Consul Miguel Escobar, adding the private citizens apprehending migrants are carrying either side arms, shot guns or rifles. "We believe that these migrants are being intimidated and their human rights are being violated." But in the Douglas the mass migration goes on for another night: the lure of better jobs in America set against the ranchers' love of their land. It is an explosive mix that now threatens this remote corner of the old Wild West.
