One of the biggest TV hits of 2004, Christmas Lights, is back on ITV1 as a series. More than 11 million viewers saw the comedy drama starring Robson Green and Mark Benton as two competitive brothers-in-law who staged a contest to put up the best festive illuminations in the street where they live. Now the two characters are set to carry on their hilarious rivalry in Northern Lights, a major new series for ITV1.

Robson plays Colin Armstrong, who has been friends with Howie, played by Mark Benton, since they were both at school. They work at the same transport depot, have married sisters and live in the same street. Colin and Howie would do anything for one another, if only they could set aside their never-ending struggle to prove who is top dog...

Northern Lights balances high drama and comedy, providing a bittersweet insight into male bonding, rivalry, and stupidity - and how it affects the long-suffering women in their lives. Colin's wife Jackie is played by Nicola Stephenson and Howie is married to her sister Pauline, played by Sian Reeves. The families receive a succession of unexpected news and setbacks putting their friendship to the test, and forcing them to confront the fact that their lifelong companionship might just be slowly drifting apart. Robson Green said: "I am really happy to be teaming up with Mark Benton again and being part of a life affirming story that deals with male stupidity, but more importantly male love."

Producer Spencer Campbell said: "I'm very excited to bring two fabulous characters, Colin and Howie, back in their own series. Northern Lights gives us the opportunity to explore the highs and lows of two mates who are the best of friends and the best of enemies." Writer and Executive Producer Jeff Pope said: "It is a rare occasion that you get two characters that have made such an immediate and special impact and it's a great pleasure to be able to have some more fun with them."
