Episode 14 "The French Connection"

Julian Richards investigates the lives of three men whose remains were found on an island just off the coast of Guernsey to find out how they ended up in such a desolate place, and whether they could have been monks.

On tiny, windswept Lihou island just off Guernsey in the Channel Isles lie the ruins of Lihou Priory. During a routine excavation and repair wirk on the Priory, three burials were found, which on closer examination were far from ordinary.

One skeleton was of a woman and another was of a man, whose bones suggest that he suffered from leprosy or syphilis. The question of “Why were they buried in a monk's graveyard?” is posed.

Archaeologist Julian Richards delves into the recorded history of the Priory, which is linked to France's most famous Benedictine Abbey, Mont St. Michel (which is also visited in the programme), and investigates the lives of the monks and others who lived on this remote island, surrounded by some of Britain's most treacherous waters.
