The Modern Pentathlon is the only event at the Olympics that was specifically created as an Olympic event. It was the brainchild of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic movement, and was designed as a test of the skills needed to be a thoroughly modern soldier. So the five events are made up of pistol shooting; fencing with an epee; 200m of swimming; riding a horse through a show jumping course (the horses are randomly allocated to the competitors to replicate the unfamiliar nag that this 'thoroughly modern soldier' would steal from the farm when they're behind enemy lines to ride home to their front line). Then finally there's 2 mile (now 3000m) run.

In many ways the event is a bit of an anachronism. Today's 'thoroughly modern soldier' would only be competing in a triathlon - activate the GPS, sit tight, wait for the Blackhawk. In terms of interest, the event in the last 50 years has been of interest mainly to competitors and teams from the old Eastern Block nations. Though that said the Brits did accidentally win the team gold medal back in 1976.
